Headword: Κατ' ὄναρ
Adler number: kappa,1086
Translated headword: in a dream
Vetting Status: high
One should not say [κατ' ὄναρ "in a dream"];[1] for [this is] altogether barbarous; rather, ὄναρ [means] both "in sleep"[2] and a sleeping dream.
Greek Original:
Κατ' ὄναρ οὐ χρὴ λέγειν: βάρβαρον γὰρ παντελῶς: ἀλλὰ ὄναρ καὶ κατὰ τοὺς ὕπνους καὶ ἐνύπνιον.
Same entry in Photius, Lexicon kappa479 Theodoridis; cf. Phrynichus, Eclogae 396 Fischer. The headword phrase is presumably quoted from somewhere, perhaps from the New Testament, as Theodoridis implies; see Matthew 1.20, 2.12, 2.13, 2.19, 2.22, 27.19.
[1] As the Suda itself does, elsewhere: see e.g. under alpha 249, lambda 867, mu 1255.
[2] For the adverbial use of ὄναρ , see LSJ s.v. II.
