Headword: Κατηχῶν
Adler number: kappa,1071
Translated headword: instructing, sounding over, sounding through
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Used] with an accusative. [Meaning someone] urging, advising.[1] The Pisidian [writes]: "overcoming in battles and instructing in battles."[2]
But κατηχῶ [sc. is also used] instead of ἠχῶ ["I sound"], [used] with a genitive. "[It] sounds over the straits." Also, "[it] sounded through the house."[3]
Greek Original:
Κατηχῶν: αἰτιατικῇ. προτρεπόμενος, παραινῶν. Πισίδης: κρατῶν ἐν μάχαις καὶ κατηχῶν ἐν μάχαις. Κατηχῶ δὲ ἀντὶ τοῦ ἠχῶ, γενικῇ. κατηχεῖ τῶν πόρων. καί, κατήχησε τῆς οἰκίας.
Notes:
[1] Present participle of κατηχέω , masculine nominative singular; presumably extracted from the first quotation given.
[2] George of Pisidia, Heraclias 3 fr.42. (Adler [addenda] notes Sternbach's wish to replace the first, unmetrical μάχαις "in battles" with αἰχμαῖς "with spears".)
[3] Both of these short quotations are unidentifiable.
Keywords: biography; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; military affairs; poetry
