Headword: Ἶσαι ψῆφοι
Adler number: iota,625
Translated headword: equal votes
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
"[...] that he would perish, even if the votes are equal". An exaggerated statement. For whenever the votes [sc. of an Athenian jury] were equal, the defendant was acquitted.
Notes:
Aristophanes, Frogs 685 (web address 1), followed by comment from the scholia there. Again at omega 217 (q.v.), and for the phrase cf. iota 623 and iota 624.
Odd-numbered juries (201, 401, 501, etc.) were introduced in the fourth century to eliminate this very problem.
