Headword: *(ippafe/sewn
Adler number: iota,526
Translated headword: of horse-starting-posts
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] of the starting-gate.[1] "He claimed that a similar experience [?had happened?] to those in charge of the horse-starting-posts; as is likely [to happen] to those stationed from the fire-signals being raised".[2]
Greek Original:
*(ippafe/sewn: th=s a)fethri/as. *polu/bios: paraplh/sio/n ti pa/qos e)/faske toi=s e)pi\ tw=n i(ppafe/sewn: oi(=on ei)ko\s e)fista/menoi e)k tw=n ai)rome/nwn pursw=n.
Notes:
The headword is genitive plural, from the quotation which follows.
For the courtesan Hippaphesis see Athenaeus, Deipnosophists 13.586E [13.51 Kaibel] and 13.592E [13.62] = Lysias fr.208 Carey OCT.
[1] cf. alpha 4592.
[2] Polybius fr. 52 Büttner-Wobst. Read (with Hultsch) dative plural e)fistame/nois for the present nominative plural in the final clause, but even so the passage is hard to construe and may be faulty. Indeed, Büttner-Wobst follows (521) Toup in replacing the Suda's e)/faske with e)/pasxe: A similar experience had happened.... Büttner-Wobst also notes (ibid.) that Hultsch deleted oi(=on ei)ko\s.
