Headword: Ἰωάννης
Adler number: iota,467
Translated headword: John [of Damascus], Johannes Damascenus
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[John] the Damascene, surnamed Mans(o)ur,[1] a most eloquent man, second to none of those who were notable for education in his time. There are a great many writings of his, especially philosophical works: Selected Parallels on the Holy Scripture, lyrical canons both iambic and in prose. Cosmas of Jerusalem flourished along with him, a very intelligent man who breathed forth musical harmony. The lyrical canons of John and Cosmas have not received nor are likely to receive any comparison, as long as our life shall last.
Notes:
John of Damascus is noted for his defense of icon-veneration and for his liturgical poetry (8th c.). See Catholic Encyclopedia entry at web address 1.
For his brother Cosmas, see also kappa 2139.
[1] = Blasphemer, according to George the Monk and others. In any event, an Arabic word.
