Headword: Ἰόρτιος
Adler number: iota,423
Translated headword: Iortios, Hirtius
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A proper name.[1] "Iortios not being able to express the marvel for himself, when silence fell, [said], 'Do you not see that, my dear drinking-companions, how the table is round and very circular?' So at such sheer flattery, as was likely, laughter broke out. For Maecenas' table was right-angled and not round. Plutarch [says this]."[2]
Notes:
[1] Almost certainly a variant of iota 602, q.v.
[2] Aelian fr. 111d Domingo-Forasté, 108 Hercher (cf. epsilon 157, mu 321). 'Plutarch' is his fr.180.
