Translated headword: of a suppliant
Vetting Status: high
The young shoot of the olive. Aeschines in the Defence [uses the word].[1] "Of a suppliant" is the name for a branch of olive, wound into a wreath.
[1] This is the form of words also found in Harpokration s.v. (from which the present entry derives), and orthodoxy construes it as Aeschin. 1.104. For an argument that "Aeschines" is an error for "Andocides", and the correct reference therefore Andocides 1.110, see D. Whitehead, "Harpocrationiana", Eikasmos 8 (1997) 157-64, at 159-60.
