Headword: Ἴδμεν
Adler number: iota,123
Translated headword: we know
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[ἴδμεν means the same as] οἴδαμεν .
Greek Original:
Ἴδμεν: οἴδαμεν.
Notes:
Same entry already in Hesychius (iota215), where Latte regards it as generated by instances of the headword in Homer (e.g. Iliad 1.124).
The older forms of the verb οἶδα have the zero-grade of the root in the plural. In the first person plural, ἴδμεν was replaced with ἴσμεν (iota 646) by analogy with ἴστε , and by οἴδαμεν (the word used to define the term here) by analogy with οἶδα in Ionic and later koine.
