Headword: Γοργύρα
Adler number: gamma,401
Translated headword: dungeon
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] an underground pit. So Dinarchus and Herodotus and others [sc. use the term].
Greek Original:
Γοργύρα: τὸ κατὰ γῆς ὄρυγμα. οὕτως Δείναρχος καὶ Ἡρόδοτος καὶ ἄλλοι.
Notes:
Dinarchus fr. LXXXIX.13 Conomis; Herodotus 3.145.1 (web address 1), as cited by Harpokration s.v. He also cites Aeschines, but no relevant passage can be identified.
This does seem to be the authentic form of the word, rather than the one which generated gamma 400.
