Headword: *gorgu/nh
Adler number: gamma,400
Translated headword: gorgyne
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning an] underground prison.
Or [so called] from a deme of Attica which behaved badly.
Greek Original:
*gorgu/nh: desmwth/rion u(po/geion. h)\ a)po\ dh/mou th=s *)attikh=s kakopra/gmonos.
Note:
A misbegotten entry on all levels. First, the word "gorgyne" (if correctly transmitted) appears to be nothing more than an inauthentic variant of "gorgyra" (for which see gamma 401). And the deme connection is surely illusory. As the C19 scholar C.G. Grotefend realized, its origins look as though they lie in the joke (for which see gamma 391) that the women of the Attic deme Teithras were gorgons - that is, alarming, dangerous and ugly (tau 579).
