Headword: Γνάφαλοι
Adler number: gamma,327
Translated headword: mattress-stuffing, flock
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Someone appeared to have sheaves of wheat in his mattress instead of stuffing [...] And he begot a male infant.[1]
"With the feathers lying beneath jaws."[2]
Notes:
On the face of it this unglossed headword is the plural of gnaphalos, a bird of unknown type mentioned by Aristotle); but in fact this gnaphaloi is a variant of knaphalla or knephalla: see LSJ s.v. knephallon.
[1] Abbreviated from Artemidorus 5.8; cf. tau 1151.
[2] Quotation unidentifiable. (It is perhaps given here because feathers served the same purpose as the headword, rather than because of the similarity between the headword and the word for jaws, gnathoi.)
