Headword: Γίγαρτον
Adler number: gamma,223
Translated headword: grape-stone
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the covering of the grape.
Greek Original:
Γίγαρτον: τὸ ἔνδυμα τῆς σταφυλῆς.
Note:
Not really: see gamma 265 on the plural of this neuter noun. Hesychius glosses the singular (as here) with the phrase τῆς σταφυλῆς τὸ ἔνδον , "the inside of the grape"; the Suda's ἔνδυμα looks like a slip. In any event, Latte on Hesychius s.v. regards these entries as stemming from Numbers 6.4 LXX (genitive case).
Keywords: botany; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; religion
