Translated headword: Galaktion, Galaction
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Proper name.
Greek Original:
*galakti/wn: o)/noma ku/rion.
Note:
The earliest surviving attestations of this name post-date the Suda: they occur in the Syngraphicae Historiae of the 13th-century historian Georgius Pachymeres, where he mentions a monk called Galaktion who was blinded under Michael VIII Palaiologos but rehabilitated, as a martyr, under his son and successor Andronikos II Palaiologos. The Suda's Galaktion, therefore, must be someone else -- perhaps the saint of that name (Galaktion or Galation) allegedly martyred, along with his wife Episteme, under Decius in 251.
