Headword: Γελλοῦς παιδοφιλωτέρα
Adler number: gamma,112
Translated headword: more overfond of children than Gello
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
She died unseasonably, and they imagined that her ghost went to children and to those [who had suffered] unseasonable deaths.
Notes:
cf. Zenobius 3.3, attributing the tale to Lesbos, and specifically to Sappho; hence the headword phrase itself is regarded as a fragment of Sappho (178 Lobel-Page).
Hesychius has two consecutive 'Gello' entries (gamma307-308) of a darker nature: there she is connected with the Empousa (epsilon 1049) and snatches the new-born.
