Headword: *(/hghmai
Adler number: eta,51
Translated headword: I consider
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] I have calculated,[1] I understood.
Greek Original:
*(/hghmai: lelo/gismai, e)/sxon.
Notes:
The headword verb is the perfect tense of h(geo/mai, which can be present in meaning (see H.Stephanus s.v. with several examples of it).
The entry is taken from Photius, Lexicon eta33, where Theodoridis notes Naber's view that the headword is quoted from the New Testament (Acts 26.2). He himself, however, adds instances in Herodotus (1.126.2, 1.115.6) and Lucian (Piscator 14); and there are, in truth, numerous others.
[1] Also in the perfect tense (of logi/zomai). According to Adler, h(/ghmai is glossed by lelo/gismai in the Lexicon Ambrosianum. Note also that in Hesychius eta91 present-tense h(gou/mai is glossed by logi/zomai. In any event, both terms are very frequently used as synonyms in all periods but especially by Patristic writers and in the Byzantine age.
