Adler number: eta,231
Translated headword: age-mate delights age-mate
Vetting Status: high
"He alone of men whom we know by hearsay refuted the old proverb in deed; for his age-mates' company did not give give him pleasure, young men did not please him though he was young, but nature following some other rule attached him to those who were like him, according to the similarity not of bodily years but of the soul's character."
Damascius, Life of Isidore fr. 99 Zintzen (51 Asmus, and now 42E Athanassiadi). For earlier appearances of this 'old proverb' see e.g. Plato, Phaedrus 240C (with this very phrase), several times in Aristotle, and the paroemiographers; Tosi (cited under alpha 378) no.1066. It is presumably the end of a line of hexameter verse.
