Headword: Ἡβηδόν
Adler number: eta,18
Translated headword: from the youth upwards
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] with every age group.[1]
But in Herodotus [the word is used] meaning with shame, with licentiousness.[2]
Greek Original:
Ἡβηδόν: σὺν πάσῃ ἡλικίᾳ. παρὰ δὲ Ἡροδότῳ ἀντὶ τοῦ μετὰ αἰσχύνης, μετὰ ἀκολασίας.
Notes:
[1] For this adverb see already eta 17.
[2] There are two instances of ἡβηδόν in Herodotus, 1.172.2 (web address 1) and 6.21.1 (web address 2). Neither of them need to be construed in this sense (which is anyway ignored in LSJ s.v.); nevertheless "with licentiousness" does comes from glosses on 1.172.2.
