Headword: Εἴτω
Adler number: epsiloniota,338
Translated headword: let go
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] let [him/he/it] proceed.[1]
[Also meaning] let [him/her/it] concede. It also means "if to anyone."[2]
Greek Original:
Εἴτω: πορευέτω. συγχωρείσθω. σημαίνει καὶ τὸ ἐάν τινι.
Notes:
[1] Same entry in other lexica; similar one in Hesychius, where the headword is glossed with ἐλθέτω and Latte claims it as quoted from Homer, Iliad 7.75. There, in fact, this third person singular imperative of εἶμι is spelled, more correctly, ἴτω (iota 748).
[2] That is, εἴ τῳ with the dative singular τῳ of the indefinite pronoun instead of τινι .
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; epic
