Adler number: epsilon,857
Translated headword: I exact harbor tax
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[no gloss]
Greek Original:
*)ellimeni/zw.
Notes:
Same entry, according to Adler, in the Ambrosian Lexicon (755).
The sense of this verb translated above is apparently its meaning in its only classical attestation: Aristophanes fr. 472 Kassel-Austin (455 Kock/Edmonds). There the second-person singular form appears parallel to dekateu/eis ('you exact a tithe': delta 181, delta 182), although Pollux 9.31 interprets this same passage as referring to the payment rather than the levying of taxes (contrast Hesychius epsilon3173, with the alternative orthography e)nlimeni/zein).
In later Greek the word comes to mean 'harbor in' or 'come into harbor'; see e.g. Synesius, Epistle 148.7. (This meaning is absent from LSJ: web address 1.)
