Notes:
Same entry (though the quotation is shorter) in ps.-Zonaras.
[1] The headword is nominative plural of this noun, either quoted from somewhere (indeterminable) or else simply generated by the accusative plural which is purportedly part of the quotation given (though see next note). LSJ s.v. deem this a word of dubious sense (web address 1) but suggest nevertheless, very plausibly, that it may be a variant of e)phgkeni/des, which occurs in the dative plural in Homer, Odyssey 5.253; LSJ translate the word there as "long planks bolted to the upright ribs of the ship", and Casson (46 n.19, 151 n.49, 218 n.5, 392) more succinctly as "gunwales".
[2] Agathias, Histories 5.21 -- which however has the form e)gkeni/das (glossed in Etymologicum Magnum 310.37). In 559 CE, the Kotrigur Huns build a flotilla of reinforced reed rafts (cf. kappa 2274) for an amphibious assault on the Thracian Chersonese's (the modern-day Gallipoli Peninsula, cf. chi 215) southwest coast; cf. alpha 1017, gamma 304, and Frendo (158).
