Headword: Ἐγκατέσκηψαν
Adler number: epsilon,80
Translated headword: they fell upon
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] they rushed at, they ran upon, they laid hold of.[1]
"The evils of the Egyptians, those in the city of Alexandria, fell also upon Rome."[2] Varro says [this].[3]
Greek Original:
Ἐγκατέσκηψαν: ἐφώρμησαν, ἐπέδραμον, ἐπεδράξαντο. Αἰγυπτίων κακά, τὰ ἐν τῇ Ἀλεξανδρείᾳ πόλει, ἐγκατέσκηψε καὶ τῇ Ῥώμῃ. Οὐάρων φησίν.
Notes:
[1] The headword, which has the same or similar glossing in other lexica (e.g. Hesychius epsilon202), is third person plural, aorist indicative active, of the verb ἐγκατασκήπτω . It is evidently quoted from somewhere (other than the quotation given, which has the corresponding third person singular, with neuter plural subject); probably (as Latte on Hesychius suggests) Philo Judaeus, De vita contemplativa 2, its only independent attestation.
[2] Aelian fr. 286 Domingo-Forasté (288 Hercher); cf. lambda 465.
[3] This, also in ps.-Zonaras, is not part of the Aelian fragment. For 'Varro' cf. omicron 767.
