Headword: *)ekporpou=sqai
Adler number: epsilon,595
Translated headword: to pin
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to fasten.
Greek Original:
*)ekporpou=sqai: e)kfiblou=sqai.
Notes:
This entry is equivalent to one in the Lexica Segueriana (214.14 Bachmann), but neither word occurs outside lexicography. How we should translate it is a matter of some doubt. Hesychius (epsilon1644) glosses the same headword with fiblou=sqai rather than e)kfiblou=sqai. This suggests that the prefix ek- is merely intensive or temporizing, and this is how both words have been translated here. Soranus, however, in De signis fracturarum 24 uses the corresponding noun e)kpo/rphsis in the sense of the "unfastening" of a bone (in dislocation or compound fracture), so "to unpin" and "unfasten" are conceivably correct here. One might also imagine (on the pattern of, e.g. e)kko/ptw ('knock [something] out'), that the words mean "remove [e.g. one's own eyes] with pins/fasteners)."
