Adler number: epsilon,554
Translated headword: completely
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] altogether.[1]
"So [sc. even] if the enemy, having understood this, completely withdrew, nothing would have prevented the destruction of the entire army."[2]
Greek Original:
Ἐκ παντός: διόλου. εἴγε οὖν τοῦτο καταμαθόντες οἱ πολέμιοι ἐκ παντὸς ἀπίασιν, οὐδὲν ἂν ἐκώλυσεν ἀπολωλέναι τὴν στρατιὰν πᾶσαν.
[1] The adverb διολού has here the meaning of completeness -- cf. καθολού -- rather than the temporal meaning mentioned in the entry for the adverb itself (delta 1160).
[2] Quotation not identified by Adler but identifiable via the TLG as an approximation (after ἐκ παντὸς read ἀπιοῦσιν αὐτοῖς ἠκολούθησαν ) of Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Roman Antiquities 9.4.2. See on this Theodoridis' Photius edition, vol.II p.LXXVII.
