Adler number: epsilon,4016
Translated headword: hateful, to be hated
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Sophocles [writes]: "the enemy is hateful to us in so far as he will be a friend hereafter; and to a friend I would wish to render so much service as to one who will not always stay [true]." One must, he is saying, devote oneself to one's enemies, as future friends; and to one's friends, as [future] enemies. So he is saying [one should] deal with matters moderately.

Sophocles, Ajax 679-682, with comment from the scholia there; cf. alpha 655.
NB: in both of these entries, and again implicitly in epsilon 4017, Sophocles is credited with having written e)xqrante/os, but the mainstream manuscript tradition of Sophocles has e)xqarte/os.
