Headword: *eu)nhqe/ntas
Adler number: epsilon,3590
Translated headword: having been laid to sleep
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning them] having been put down to bed.
Greek Original:
*eu)nhqe/ntas: katakoitasqe/ntas.
Notes:
The headword is the aorist passive participle, masculine accusative plural, of the verb eu)na/w. (The gloss is the corresponding form of the (rare) compound verb katakoita/zw.) For the headword see already Hesychius epsilon7011, with the more commonplace gloss koimhqe/ntas. The headword is perhaps quoted from its only extant instance outside lexicography. A Delphic oracle in hexameter verse, issued to the Macedonian king (C7 BCE) Perdiccas who had asked how he might strengthen his realm, told him to found a capital city 'where he saw goats [aiges] white horned and snowy-fleeced which had been laid to sleep' (Diodorus Siculus 7.16, preserved in the Excerpta Constantiniana; Anthologiae Graecae Appendix, Oracles, epigram 88) -- that is, at Aigai. See Fontenrose 375 #L51, cf. 374-5 #L50.
Latte on Hesychius (above) cited Homer, Odyssey 8.292 (web address 1), as the catalyst for that entry (and by extension the Suda's), but its participle is in the nominative, plural or dual, correspondingly glossed in the scholia thereto and in other lexica.
cf. pi 550
