Headword: Εὐαγές
Adler number: epsilon,3358
Translated headword: guiltless, pollution-free
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning something] pure, pious, holy, very godlike.[1]
"He was from a conspicuous family, one which did not boast itself in luxurious power, nor in sycophantic excess of wealth."[2]
Greek Original:
Εὐαγές: ἁγνόν, εὐσεβές, ὅσιον, θειότατον. γένους δὲ ἦν εὐαγοῦς, οὐκ ἐπὶ δυνάμει τρυφώσῃ λαμπρυνομένου, οὐδὲ ἐπὶ χρημάτων περιουσίᾳ κολακικῇ.
Notes:
[1] Likewise or similarly in other lexica. The headword is neuter nominative/accusative singular (again epsilon 3359) of this adjective (cf. epsilon 3360). It is extracted not from the quotation given here (on which see next note) but, apparently, from Demosthenes 9.44; see the scholia there.
[2] Quotation (more briefly in ps.-Zonaras) unidentifiable. (Adler suggests Aelian.) It appears to illustrate LSJ's εὐαγής (C), after the first part of the entry has been concerned with εὐαγής (A).
Keywords: biography; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; economics; ethics; religion; rhetoric
