Headword: *)/estai
Adler number: epsilon,3202
Translated headword: will be
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Homer uses this in four ways: e)/ssetai, e)ssei=tai, e)/stai.
Greek Original:
*)/estai: tetraxw=s tou/tw| xra=tai *(/omhros: e)/ssetai, e)ssei=tai, e)/stai.
Notes:
Similar material, according to Adler, in Anecdota Oxoniensia 1.136.6 and 1.175.6 (the latter giving rise to entries in the Etymologicum Gudianum and, post-Suda, the Etymologicum Magnum). Compare also epsilon 3126.
Only three forms for the epic third person singular, future, of ei)mi/ are cited here; the fourth would be e)/setai. In order to make the entry coherent, one may therefore either add e)/setai to the list given (so Aemilius Portus, Tittman, Gaisford, as in the An.Ox.) or else modify 'four ways'. Adler reports that ms T has 'many ways' (pollaxw=s), and Kuster emended to 'three ways' (trixw=s), as in Etym.Magn..
