['Red Sea'] was the name given to the Persian Gulf, not from the colour of the waves, as some suppose, but to perpetuate the name of a man called Erythros ["Red"] who had held sway in the region.

Ἐρυθρὰ θάλασσα ἐκλήθη ὁ Περσικὸς κόλπος, οὐκ ἀπὸ τῆς χροιᾶς τοῦ ῥοθίου, καθάπερ τινὲς οἴονται, ἀλλ' ἔκ τινος ἀνδρὸς Ἐρυθροῦ τὴν προσηγορίαν, ἐνδυναστεύσαντος τοῖσδε τοῖς τόποις.
