Xenophon [writes]: "[he thought it best] to ask whether there was anyone who might wish to be proved a brave man, for having willingly undertaken the advance action."[2] "Having taken from the whole army those who were willing."[3]
Ἐθελοντίους is also used. "He expected that the Arabs would willingly agree."[4]

Ἐθελοντής: βουλόμενος. ἢ χωρητός. Ξενοφῶν: διερωτᾶν, εἴ τίς ἐστιν, ὅστις ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς ἐθέλοι ἂν γενέσθαι, ὑποστὰς ἐθελοντὴς πορεύεσθαι. προσλαβὼν ἐθελοντὰς ἐκ παντὸς τοῦ στρατεύματος. λέγεται καὶ Ἐθελοντίους. προσεδόκησεν ἐθελοντίους τοὺς Ἀραβίους ὁμολογήσειν.
