[ἐπιχειρητέα is used] instead of ἐπιχειρητέον ,[1] like τολμητέα ["must be dared"]. For Thucydides loves things like these.[2]
Greek Original:
Ἐπιχειρητέα: ἀντὶ τοῦ ἐπιχειρητέον, ὡς τὸ τολμητέα. φιλεῖ γὰρ Θουκυδίδης τὰ τοιαῦτα.
= Synagoge epsilon778; Photius, Lexicon epsilon1805; cf. scholia to Thucydides ad locc. (see note 2 below). For something similar see alpha 537.
[1] This is simply the neuter singular form of the headword, which is either neuter plural or feminine singular (as is τολμητέα coming up). The point is that verbal adjectives of obligation in -τέος occur more frequently in the neuter singular in impersonal construction, whereas Thucydides likes to make them agree with with the subject of the verbal idea inherent in the adjective.
[2] Specifically, Thucydides uses the headword at 1.118.2 (web address 1) and 2.3.3 (web address 2); however, he never uses τολμητέα .
