Headword: Ἐπιτολμῆσαι
Adler number: epsilon,2709
Translated headword: to make a daring attack on
Vetting Status: high
[Used] with a dative. [Meaning] to plot against.[1] "And he persuades them to make a daring attack on Lykides and Sosibios, and, such as he is, and they being merchants, flatters them and easily persuades them, even though it was the dead of night."[2]
Greek Original:
Ἐπιτολμῆσαι: δοτικῇ. ἐπιβουλεύσασθαι. καὶ ἀναπείθει ἐπιτολμῆσαι τῷ Λυκίδῃ καὶ τῷ Σωσιβίῳ, ἐπαίρει δὲ ἅτε φορτηγοὺς τοιοῦτος ῥᾷστά τε ἀναπείθει, καὶ νυκτὸς γενομένης ἀκράτου.
[1] The headword, presumably extracted from the quotation given, is aorist active infinitive of the compound verb ἐπιτολμάω . For another instance of it with the dative see under alpha 4218.
[2] Aelian fr. 262 Hercher, 260 Domingo-Forasté. (See also under epsilon 2759.) Kuster suggested emending the nominative singular τοιοῦτος to the accusative plural τοιούτους , which would render the second part as "and he flatters them, being merchants of such a sort.". Adler did not follow this, but did adopt Bernhardy's expansion of the second name given, transmitted (and printed by Hercher) as Sos.
