Headword: Ἐπισφυρίοις
Adler number: epsilon,2652
Translated headword: with ankle-pieces
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] with the things tied around the greaves.
Greek Original:
Ἐπισφυρίοις: τοῖς ἐπὶ τῶν κνημίδων περιδεδεμένοις.
Notes:
= Synagoge epsilon749; Photius, Lexicon epsilon1738. The headword is dative plural, and occurs as such in an Iliadic armor formula καλάς, ἀργυρέοισιν ἐπισφυρίοις ἀραρυίας ("fine [greaves] fitted with silver ankle-pieces"): Homer, Iliad 3.331 (web address 1), 11.18, 16.132. The entry probably derives from scholia/commentary on the first of these passages; cf. also Apollonius Sophistes, Homeric Lexicon 74.19-20, and Hesychius epsilon5275.
For 'greaves' see kappa 1866.
