Egyptians invented this science, having first learned it from the immensity of the earth and the division of the lands, and then having written it down.

Ἐπιστήμη: ὅτι γεωμετρία ἐστὶν ἐπιστήμη ἐπιστητοῦ ἢ ὑποληπτοῦ. ἐπιστητὰ γὰρ καὶ ὑποληπτὰ καὶ τὰ ὧν ἐστιν ἡ γεωμετρία ἐπιστήμη. ταύτην δὲ τὴν ἐπιστήμην ἐφεῦρον Αἰγύπτιοι, ἐκ τοῦ ἀπλέτου τῆς γῆς καὶ τῆς διαιρέσεως τῶν χωρῶν προδιδαχθέντες, εἶτα καὶ συγγράψαντες.
