Headword: Ἐδωρήσατο
Adler number: epsilon,261
Translated headword: donated
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] showed favor.[1] "He additionally gave the excess weapons to his friends, and to some of the leaders who were his friends he donated tents; altogether he tried to do everything useful for each of them."[2]
Greek Original:
Ἐδωρήσατο: ἐφιλοφρονήσατο. τὰ περιττὰ τῶν ὅπλων τοῖς ἐπιτηδείοις προσανέδωκε, τισὶ δὲ τῶν ἡγεμόνων σκηνὰς ἐδωρήσατο τῶν ἐπιτηδείων: καθόλου δὲ πᾶν τὸ πρόσφορον ἐπειρᾶτο ποιεῖν ἑκάστοις.
Notes:
[1] Likewise in ps.-Zonaras. The headword is third person singular, aorist middle, of δωρέω (cf. epsilon 260, delta 1477). It might be extracted from the quotation which follows, though ps.-Zonaras does not have it, and there are many other possibilities (beginning with 4 in Herodotus).
[2] Quotation unidentifiable (but perhaps Polybius, who has the only other preserved instance of "additionally gave" προσανέδωκε ).
Keywords: biography; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; ethics; historiography; military affairs
