Headword: Ἐπικωμάσαι
Adler number: epsilon,2408
Translated headword: to go wild, to revel
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to dance, or to speak shameful [words].[1]
"Many disturbances went wild in respect of the churches."[2]
Greek Original:
Ἐπικωμάσαι: ὀρχεῖσθαι, ἢ λαλῆσαι αἰσχρά. πολλαὶ ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις ἐπεκώμασαν ταραχαί.
Notes:
[1] Likewise or similarly in other lexica. The headword is aorist infinitive of ἐπικωμάζω ; cf. under kappa 2263. It must be extracted from somewhere (other than the quotation given here: see next note). Extant possibilities include Diogenes Laertius 7.13 on King Antigonus Gonatas' attempts to inveigle Zeno into parties (τὸν βασιλέα ἐπικωμάσαι αὐτῷ κτλ ).
[2] Isidore of Pelusium, Epistles 1237.2, quoted already at epsilon 2041. It includes the third person plural, aorist indicative, of the headword verb.
