Headword: *)ephgkulhme/na cu/la
Adler number: epsilon,2162
Translated headword: thong-fitted timbers
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] ones bent into (?)godlike forms, for use of [= as] weapons.
Greek Original:
*)ephgkulhme/na cu/la: ta\ kekamme/na ei)s qeoeidh= sxh/mata, ei)s xrh=sin o(/plwn.
Notes:
Similarly in ps.-Zonaras (see further below). The headword phrase, in the neuter plural, must be quoted from somewhere. One might think, from this attempt at glossing it, that its meaning was particularly obscure, but the out-of-place 'godlike' (qeoeidh=) surely needs emendation. (This whole phrase is ignored in ps.-Zonaras.) Adler notes Hermann's proposal of sigmoeidh= ('crescent-shaped', i.e. semi-circular).
For the etymology of the perfect middle-passive participle (from a verb e)pagkule/w) cf. alpha 251.
cf. generally Hesychius epsilon263, e)gkri/kia: cu/la kekamme/na.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; military affairs; religion; science and technology; trade and manufacture
