[Meaning they who were] carried back.
Greek Original:
*)epanaxqe/ntes: e)panakomisqe/ntes.
Notes:
= Lexica Segueriana 226.11 (and repeated in ps.-Zonaras). Both the headword -- perhaps quoted from an historiographical source: there are instances in Herodotus, Polybius, Diodorus and Appian -- and the gloss are aorist passive participles in the masculine nominative plural. Hesychius epsilon4180, earlier, had presented an equivalent entry but with either masculine accusative singulars or neuter nominative/accusative plurals, i.e. e)panaxqe/nta glossed with e)panakimosqe/nta. (Oddly, Latte there claims the source to be the Septuagint, 2 Maccabees 12:4, but that passage has masculine accusative plural e)panaxqe/ntas, and a better candidate for Hesychius' source would be the neuter plural in Polybius 15.2.6.)
The headword verb frequently has the middle sense of "put to sea" (e.g. Herodotos 7.195.1 (web address 1), and both the headword and the gloss can have the middle sense of "return". See LSJ s.v. e)pana/gw (web address 2) and e)panakomi/zw (web address 3).
