Translation: In ancient times the Athenians lived in villages, but Kekrops[1] brought them together and settled them in 12 tribes; he gave the citizen-body the name Kekropia after himself; two of the four-city units he named from the four cities [concerned], establishing a share for each; the three remaining ones he named epaktrides ['hilly'];[2] and the territory attaching to these three used to be called, homonymously, Epaktrias.
