St. Basil (beta 150) is attempting to refute his opponents' interpretation of 1 Corinthians 8.6: "For us there is one God, the Father, out of whom (e)c ou(=) are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom (di' ou(=) are all things and through whom we exist." The followers of Aetius (alpha 571), Basil says, argue that because different prepositions are used with the Father and the Son, the Father and the Son must not be of the same nature. Basil replies that this argument is too literal-minded, and is too much influenced by pagan philosophy: in particular, he shows that the the preposition ek/ex is used in Scripture with various senses.
