Notes:
(Entry lacking, Adler reports, in mss ATFV.)
Perhaps the lexicographer was interrupted in the course of transcribing Hesychius epsilon3642 (cf. ps.-Zonaras epsilon770), where a gloss is given: e)ceph/dhsen.
Among the surviving attestations of the headword -- third person singular, aorist indicative active (with nu-moveable), of epsilon 450/epsilon 451 -- the original source is perhaps Greek Anthology 9.83.4, although Homer does use the form without nu-moveable at Iliad 21.539 and in tmesis at Iliad 7.182 (most famously), 15.573 and Odyssey 10.207. See also epsilon 449.
Keywords: dialects, grammar, and etymology; epic; poetry
