Translated headword: obstinately denying, obstinate in denying

[Meaning] he who persists in denying, and denies completely.[1] "Despite having been whipped, he was obstinate in denying that he had said anything."[2]
Greek Original:
*)/ecarnos: o( tw=| a)rnei=sqai e)pime/nwn, kai\ a)rnou/menos kaqo/lou. o( de\ mastigwqei\s e)/carnos h)=n mhde\n ei)rhke/nai.
Notes:
[1] Same gloss at Etymologicum Magnum 346.50; cf. ps.-Zonaras, epsilon755, with gloss a)rnou/menos (Hesychius epsilon3604, Scholia recentiora on Aristophanes, Clouds 1230a). See also ps.-Zonaras iota1124 [ = iota 728], where the same explanation occurs as a gloss for i(sxurognw/mwn; Photius, Lexicon, alpha2263 s. v. a)/parnos; scholion on Aristophanes, Plutus 241, with gloss a)parnei=tai for e)/carnos e)sti/, Lexicon Vindobonense epsilon217, with a quotation from Libanius. An attempted etymology by Hesychius alpha7332 s.v. a)/rna, defined as "the oath at Clazomenae: hence e)/carnos"; cf. also scholia recentiora on Aristophanes, Clouds 1230b: "it seems derived from 'declare what is outside and separate,' as if e)/carnos were said instead of "denial outside"; but this is not true; it shows rather the emphasis on the intensity [of the denial]".
[2] Adler tentatively suggested Aelian, but a TLG search shows Iamblichus, Babyloniaca fr. 118 Habrich, with a slight discrepancy (the participle mastigwqei\s seems to have been added): see sigma 1158 s. v. straggaliw=des - straggalwth\ ("whip"): o( de\ e)ke/leusen au)to\n mastigou=sqai th=| straggalwth=|. o( de\ e)/carnos h)=n ktl.. For examples of e)/carnos with an infinitive, see Demosthenes 21.174, 29.10; Herodotus 3.66; Aristophanes, Plutus 241; Andocides 1.125.
