An attempted etymology by Hesychius alpha7332 s.v. a)/rna, defined as "the oath at Clazomenae: hence e)/carnos"; cf. also scholia recentiora on Aristophanes, Clouds 1230b: "it seems derived from 'declare what is outside and separate,' as if e)/carnos were said instead of "denial outside"; but this is not true; it shows rather the emphasis on the intensity [of the denial]".
