Adler number: epsilon,1557
Translated headword: to rise
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[no gloss]
Greek Original:
*)eca=rai.
Notes:
Aorist active infinitive of e)cai/rw. Already in Hesychius (epsilon3594), with a gloss explaining that it is the term for a bird rising from the ground (see LSJ s.v., I.1.b). That fact means that it is probably quoted from Diodorus Siculus 2.50.5, on the inability of the (?)ostrich to do this.
cf. generally epsilon 1554, epsilon 1579, epsilon 1581, epsilon 1744, epsilon 1747.
Keywords: dialects, grammar, and etymology; historiography; zoology
