Headword: Ἐνόδιον
Adler number: epsilon,1385
Translated headword: wayside
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] something on the road [ὁδός ].[1]
But ἐνῴδιον [is] an earring [ἐνώτιον ]; [so called] from causing a swelling [οἰδεῖν ] of the ears [ὦτα ].[2]
Greek Original:
Ἐνόδιον: τὸ ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ. Ἐνῴδιον δὲ τὸ ἐνώτιον: παρὰ τὸ οἰδεῖν τὰ ὦτα.
Notes:
The entry juxtaposes, and differentiates between, two words very similar in pronunciation.
[1] Likewise in ps.-Zonaras and, according to Adler, the Ambrosian Lexicon. The headword, which the glossing shows to be neuter nominative/accusative singular (rather than masculine accusative singular) of this adjective, must be quoted from somewhere. (The few extant possibilities are all post-classical.)
[2] Repeated at epsilon 1404.
Keywords: clothing; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; geography; medicine
