Headword: *)/enhn kai\ ne/an
Adler number: epsilon,1296
Translated headword: old-and-new
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[This] is what Athenians call the day we call the thirtieth, from its being the end of the preceding month and the beginning of the next. But Polemon[1] maintains that once he[2] called it Demetrias in honor of Demetrius the Macedonian.[3] They call "of the day after tomorrow"[4] and "to the day after tomorrow" the [period] to the third; and by itself e(/non, roughly aspirated, signifies what is prior and past.

Notes:
For the headword see already epsilon 1292, epsilon 1293, and cf. epsilon 1295. [Note the absence of the rough breathing assigned at the end of the lemma (also by Hesychius and at LSJ 'e(/nos C') to this word in this meaning 'belonging to the previous cycle, month or year'.] The present entry derives from Harpokration s.v., commenting on Hyperides fr. 168 Jensen.
[1] Polemon of Ilion [pi 1888] fr. 8 FHG (7 Preller).
[2] So the transmitted text; but clearly we need "they", as in Harpok.
[3] King Demetrius Poliorcetes, after whom (in the late C4 BCE) the Athenians certainly did name a state trireme and a new tribe (as 'Demetrias' in both cases).
[4] Genitive here; accusative in Harpok. For the distinction between the word with the rough breathing and that with the smooth see epsilon 1295.
