cf. generally epsilon 1195.
[1] Greek Anthology 6.217.10 (attributed to Simonides), a Gallus beats his timbrel in order to frighten away a lion; cf. Gow and Page vol. I (180); vol. II (517-518); and further extracts at alpha 3019, beta 473, eta 482, lambda 147, and omicron 541. The Galli (cf. gamma 41, gamma 42) were eunuch priests of Kybele (kappa 2586). Although they admit the possibility that the Gallus here dedicates his female garments, which mark his devotion to Kybele, Gow and Page find it more likely (vol. II, 518) that the offering is just the insignia worn by devotees within the cult.
