Adler number: delta,837
Translated headword: to use a roasted [bean]
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to vote, to cast lots. For they used to call the bean 'roasted'. Instead of pebbles the Athenians' jurors used to carry beans.
Greek Original:
*diafruktou=n: diayhfi/zein, diaklhrou=n. to\n ga\r ku/amon e)ka/loun frukto/n. a)nti\ de\ yh/fwn kua/mous e)fo/roun oi( tw=n *)aqhnai/wn dikastai/.
Notes:
Again at phi 756. The gloss embodies a misconception, however. Athenian jurors did vote with "pebbles"; originally literally so; by the C4 BCE, with metal ballots still referred to as pebbles (yh=foi). The place of beans, however, was in the pre-C4 procedure of appointing officials by lot. See e.g. Thucydides 8.69.4 (web address 1); Xenophon, Memorabilia 1.2.9 (web address 2); and generally Staveley (below) 61-2.
cf. kappa 2575, kappa 2577, kappa 2578.
