Headword: *dhmo/koinon
Adler number: delta,449
Translated headword: public-common
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] public [sc. property].[1]
Something of the public's.
Also [sc. attested is the masculine] dhmo/koinos, [meaning a] public torturer.[2]
Or the demios.[3]
Greek Original:
*dhmo/koinon: dhmo/sion. to\ tou= dhmosi/ou. kai\ *dhmo/koinos, dhmo/sios basanisth/s. h)\ o( dh/mios.
Notes:
[1] Likewise in Hesychius and other lexica. The headword (which must be quoted from somewhere but is not independently attested) is more probably neuter nominative/accusative singular -- as indeed is assumed by the additional gloss given here, and explicit in ps.-Zonaras -- than accusative singular of the masculine noun which features below.
[2] The Suda's source now becomes Harpokration s.v., an entry prompted by the mention of this functionary in Isocrates 17.15. For discussion of, and bibliography on, public torture in Athens see Konstantinos Kapparis, Apollodoros 'Against Neaira' [D. 59] (Berlin and New York 1999) 424-429.
[3] See already delta 434.
