Headword: *deimatw=n
Adler number: delta,325
Translated headword: frightening
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] causing fear.[1]
Also [sc. attested is] deimatou=tai ["is frightened"], [meaning] is afraid.[2]
Greek Original:
*deimatw=n: fobw=n. kai\ *deimatou=tai, fobei=tai.
Notes:
cf. epsilon 215; also delta 321 and the other cross-references there.
[1] The headword (which must be quoted from somewhere) purports to be present active participle, masculine nominative singular, of the verb deimato/w, glossed with the corresponding participle of fobe/w; in Photius and Hesychius, however, both words are genitive plurals of nouns; and deima/twn is much more common than deimatw=n.
[2] Present indicative middle/passive, third person singular, of the same verb; again, evidently quoted from somewhere (but unattested outside lexica).
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; ethics
