Headword: *drape/ths
Adler number: delta,1503
Translated headword: runaway (slave)
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] he who runs away [a)podrw=n] from slavery.
He who (?)is gambling [peteu/wn] to act decisively [dra=n,[1] i.e. who is fleeing.
[In] drapetes the dra- [is] long.
Greek Original:
*drape/ths: o( a)podrw=n th=s doulei/as. o( to\ dra=n peteu/wn, o(/ e)sti feu/gwn. drape/ths, to\ dra makro/n.
Notes:
cf. delta 1502 and (more broadly) delta 1509.
[1] The etymology here (also in Etymologicum Gudianum and Etymologicum Magnum 286.46) is incomprehensible. The verb peteu/w must represent the Attic form petteu/w of pesseu/w 'gamble' (at board games), but this connection is implausible. Besides, the dra- in drape/ths is the root seen in didra/skw "run", not that in dra/w "act". See further at pi 1391.
