Headword: *do/s
Adler number: delta,1404
Translated headword: give
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[do/s, plural] do/te.[1]
And "'give': all of life [sc. says this]; but 'receive' you might not hear even (?)on ships."[2]
Greek Original:
*do/s: do/te. kai\ do/s: pa=s o( bi/os: la/be d' ou)d' e)pi\ nhusi\n a)kou/sais.
Notes:
No equivalent entry in other lexica.
[1] The headword is the second person singular aorist imperative of di/dwmi; the "gloss" is its plural.
[2] If the initial kai/ is included, this is a dactylic hexameter; but Adler notes (without positively endorsing) Bernhardy's judgment that the quotation begins at do/s (as adopted here). Without the kai/, the hexameter could be completed by Scaliger's suggestion of supplying do/te after the do/s. As regards the sense of the verse itself (which sounds proverbial, but is not in the collections and is otherwise unidentifiable), Drachmann wanted an a)/n before a)kou/sais; and irrespective of that, the transmitted 'on ships' is so baffling in this context that it has been deemed corrupt.
